Getting a tattoo is exciting, whether it’s your first or your tenth, but good aftercare is always essential.
A fresh tattoo is an open wound, and how you look after it will directly affect how it heals and how it looks long term. Keeping the area clean and following aftercare instructions properly will greatly reduce the risk of infection and help your tattoo heal beautifully.
It’s normal for a new tattoo to feel sore, swollen, red, or irritated for a few days. You may also notice bruising, scabbing, or peeling as it heals. This usually settles within 3–5 days, though some tattoos can look irritated for up to a week. Do not pick scabs or peeling skin, as this can pull ink out and cause patchy healing.
Your tattoo will be wrapped in cling film or a dermal skin product after your appointment.
This should stay on for 1–3 days depending on the size of the tattoo, cling film will need to be changed regularly. Each time you change it, gently wash the tattoo with clean hands, warm water, and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean towel and allow it to air briefly before rewrapping.
Once you remove the cling film completely and the tattoo has dried out, begin applying a very thin layer of aftercare cream. The goal is to lightly moisturise, not smother. (Rub it in) Too much cream can slow healing.
We recommend Palmer’s Cocoa Butter.
Healing usually takes 2–4 weeks. During this time, avoid soaking the tattoo, excessive sun exposure, heavy sweating, and alcohol. Stay hydrated, look after yourself, and listen to your body.
If you notice spreading redness, heat, swelling, or pus, seek medical advice as these are signs of infection.
If your artist gave specific advice regarding your tattoo ten consider their advice first.
